"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

Mary Oliver, "The Summer Day"

Welcome To

Speak For The Trees

Let’s Introduce Ourselves!

Josie H.

Helllooo all! My name is Josie Hammond, and I am a Tennessee native. I live a short distance from Edwin and Percy Warner Parks, which have cultivated my love for the great outdoors since childhood. Recently, I was able to build upon my appreciation of nature through a NOLS backpacking trip through Wyoming—a raw look at nature completely undisturbed from the rest of the world that transformed the way I viewed my own role in nature’s story. Every day was a study in how to appreciate the little things and seek joy even when we were hungry, exhausted, or sore. I hope this page can be a similar study in gratitude and joy, shining as a beacon of hope in a world that can seem dark at times. The world is in dire need of assistance, but hope is the biggest tool in creating change, and change is necessary, now more than ever. I hope to remind people of the beauty of the world we’re fighting for and inspire them into action. My favorite Mary Oliver poem is “When I am Among the Trees”, and my favorite line is “When I am among the trees, especially the willows and the honey locust, equally the beech, the oaks and the pines, they give off such hints of gladness. I would almost say that they save me, and daily.”
Hi all! I’m Liv Adao, and I’ve lived in Tennessee for about five years now. As a Southern California native, when I moved here I was instantly in love with the amount of greenery I saw, and the beautiful seasons we get here. So close to mountains, I love to hike at local parks or go on aimless drives around the countryside. I also love to read, and I believe strongly in the power of words to transform thoughts and inspire action, which is why I’m a part of this project! I hope to help create an accessible hub of information to encourage people, especially teens, to care for and pay attention to the world around them. My favorite Mary Oliver poem right now is “Have You Ever Tried To Enter The Long Black Branches”, and my favorite line is “Who can travel the miles who does not put one foot in front of the other, all attentive to what presents itself continually?”

We at Speak For the Trees believe it is a serious thing to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world,

and hope to educate, inspire, and act in a way that gives back to the earth that has cared so well for us for so long.

We hope to inform people of the role they play in the world, and the problems that threaten it, including governmental policies and our own actions.

We hope to encourage our readers of their ability to create change both big and small in the world.

We hope to provide resources for ways to create substantial change on a local and global level, including volunteering, charities, petitions and more!

August 19, 2025

Click the link above to submit a comment on the new staffing and agency reorganization plan that would affect the Forest Service (USFS) before AUGUST 26. This is an opportunity to speak out against the mass layoffs in USDA agencies that have been occurring since February. These layoffs threaten programs that protect forests, maintain trails, reduce wildfire risk, and manage the landscapes where millions of Americans hike, climb, paddle, ski, climb, and bike.
